A very fine quality Napoleon III Second Empire period inkstand, attributed to legendary Parisian bronze founder Fedinand Barbedienne (1810-1892), likely derives from works by important French designer Edouard Lièvre (1828-1886).
This stunning example dating to the second half of the 19th century, finished in Neoclassical taste, featuring ornate chiseled and gilded bronze ormolu mounts showcasing an elegant soft rossi antico marble coloring (warm red with black hues) ovoid shape inkwell with finial topped hinged lid surmounted and supported by a circular cup base raised on footed pedestal. Richly detailed classical gilt bronze mask over horns adorned with fiolate motif upper, Greek lyre musical string instrument flanked by trailing leafy vine lower.
