This antique Japanese Imari porcelain oval plate dates to the late 19th century, during the Meiji period (circa 1868–1912). Produced in the Arita region of Japan and exported through the port of Imari, the plate reflects the highly decorative Kinrande style developed for Western markets. It features a scalloped edge and a dense, vibrant composition combining underglaze cobalt blue with overglaze red, gold, and subtle green enamels. The surface is richly ornamented with traditional panel designs showcasing florals, scrolling foliage, and a bird or phoenix motif, framed by an elaborate border.
Imari ware became internationally popular due to its bold color palette and intricate patterns, filling European demand when Chinese porcelain exports declined in the 17th century and resurging in popularity again during the Meiji era. Plates of this type were widely collected and displayed as decorative objects rather than for daily use, making them enduring examples of Japanese export porcelain. This piece represents classic late 19th-century Imari craftsmanship and is well suited for collectors of Asian ceramics, Japanese porcelain, or Meiji-era decorative arts.
