The lid is richly decorated … Read more Rectangular Japanese lacquer calligraphy box (suzuribako) with its original contents, in beautiful glossy black lacquer. The lid is richly decorated with a bouquet of autumn flowers in reddish-brown lacquer – chrysanthemums, grasses and other flowering plants – finely rendered in layers and delicate lines that give the motif depth and movement.

Dimensions: height 5.5 cm, width 19.5 cm, depth 27 cm.

The interior is finished in warm red lacquer and contains a porcelain water dropper (suiteki), an inkstone (suzuri) wrapped in paper with an ink stick (sumi), and a calligraphy brush (fude). The underside is finished in gold-flecked lacquer and bears a gold-coloured inscription stating that this box was presented as a gift in 1983, on the occasion of a meeting of Shimane University.

The box comes in its original cardboard outer box marked Yakumo-nuri, a lacquerware tradition from the Matsue region in Shimane.

The set is unused and in very good condition, with only minimal traces of storage and light shelf wear to the box and surface. See less
