Offered is a heavy Murano art glass catchall bowl / ashtray designed by Renato Anatra in the 1970s. It's a rich, deep Amethyst color with a freeform slightly organic shape that catches light beautifully. It is signed "R Anatra on the base.
Ghiacciato - Italian for "frozen" - features the surface having a kind of "craquelure". The effect is obtained by plunging the semi-finished piece into water for just a few seconds when it is still hot (about 800° Celsius) and then exposing it to the heat of the furnace again. This technique has been used since antiquity and was much in use in the 16th Century in the production of glasses and bowls.
