Revelry in Relief: A Magnificent Staffordshire Pearlware Bacchus Jug
This monumental English Pearlware Pottery Jug offers a glimpse into the vibrant world of late 18th and early 19th-century ceramics. Often classified as Prattware, this figural jug was crafted in Staffordshire around 1800, capturing the Roman god of wine, agriculture, and fertility, Bacchus (Dionysus), in a complex, striking form. It is notable for its intricate modeling and the distinctive use of underglaze colors, particularly the rich manganese purple, ochre, and green.
The Anatomy of Merriment
The jug is a masterful piece of three-dimensional storytelling, presenting Bacchus seated comfortably upon a wine barrel, draped in a lion skin cloak. The vessel itself is ingeniously integrated with the sculpture: a large cornucopia rests on Bacchus's right shoulder, forming the jug's lip, while the spout is a dramatically realized green fish, from whose open mouth the liquid would flow.
Supporting Bacchus's mood of indulgence, the figure is accompanied by mischievous attendants: the handle is a monkey perched on his left shoulder, and on the reverse, a faun (Pan) is sculpted, complete with his pipes and a watchful owl by his side. Further enhancing the mythological theme, the base of the barrel is surrounded by molded clusters of purple grapes and green leaves. The pearlware body provides a creamy white ground that beautifully highlights the clarity of the molded figures and the bold, rich color palette typical of the Prattware period (1780-1840).
Historical Significance and Master Modelers
This jug belongs to a specific and highly desirable tradition in English earthenware: large figural vessels celebrating classical and allegorical themes. Its detailed modeling is a crucial link to the era's foremost artisans:
Wood Family Model / Attributed to Voyez: The jug's form is believed to derive from a model created by the renowned Wood Family potters of Staffordshire. Specifically, as documented in Sir Harold Mackintosh's Early English Figure Pottery (1938, pp. 73, 92), the intricate design is often attributed to Jean-Pierre Voyez, a talented French modeler active in the region. Voyez was known for his spirited and theatrical figures, a style perfectly reflected in this dynamic Bacchus sculpture.
Prattware Tradition: The jug's inclusion in major reference works, such as John and Griselda Lewis's Pratt Ware: English and Scottish relief decorated and underglaze coloured earthenware, 1780-1840 (Page 219), confirms its place within this defined period of ceramic production. This tradition is characterized by high-relief molding and the striking application of underglaze color before the final clear glaze, creating a look that is both highly detailed and wonderfully vibrant.
This large jug is a robust and historically significant example of English folk art elevated by classical influence, embodying the celebratory spirit of its time.
