Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839-1892) Japanese woodblock print, F Ii no Hayata Killing a Nue in the Imperial Palace, from the New Forms of the 36 Ghosts series.
The print depicts the warrior Ii no Hayata killing a nue, a mythical monster that tormented the Emperor. The nue is described as having the head of a monkey, the body of a badger/tiger, the legs of a tiger, and a snake for a tail. The creature was first shot down with an arrow by Minamoto no Yorimasa, the commander of the palace guards, after it appeared as a black cloud. Ii no Hayata, Yorimasa's retainer, then finished the beast with his dagger, as shown in the print.
