Important Set of Flight, Barr & Barr Worcester Armorial Claret-ground Dessert Plates,
Twelve Plates
Circa 1820-1825
This exceptional set of twelve dessert plates exemplifies the opulent and highly refined production of the renowned Flight, Barr & Barr Worcester porcelain manufactory during the late Regency period. Each plate is exquisitely designed with a gracefully scalloped, gilt-edged rim that frames a wide and sumptuous claret-ground border. This rich border is further enhanced with elaborate, shaped cartouches with raised and meticulously tooled gilt beads, showcasing the technical mastery for which the firm was celebrated.
At the center of each cartouche is a finely painted armorial crest displaying a striking red wolf with a blue tongue and white teeth. The crest is surmounted by the motto "BOULOGNE ET CADIX". This motto is associated with the House of Châtillon, a prominent French noble family, and commemorates the significant naval military campaigns at Boulogne and Cadiz during the late 17th and 18th centuries. The commissioning of such a service from a premier English manufactory speaks to the international prestige of both the family and the porcelain works, representing a fascinating intersection of English craftsmanship and French aristocratic history.
The plates are a testament to the quality that earned Flight, Barr & Barr a Royal Warrant and a distinguished clientele. Their luxurious design and historical significance make them a truly remarkable survival.
Marks: Each plate bears the impressed crowned monogram "FBB" for Flight, Barr, and Barr, and one also has the circular printed factory mark on the base.
