Colorful serigraph by Croatian naive artist Ivan Rabuzin (b. 27 March 1921, d. 18 December 2008.) A grove of trees sits in the center of flower field in this idyllic spring landscape. Ivan Rabuzin was born in the small village of Kljuc, near Novi Marof, Croatia in 1921. He was the sixth of eleven children and his father worked as a miner. As an adult, Rabuzin moved to Zagreb where he studied carpentry, then returned to Novi Marof, eventually becoming the foreman at the furniture factory located in the town. He did not begin painting until he was thirty-five years old. His paintings were derived from his childhood landscape and local countryside. He won first prize at the Exhibition of Amateur Painters in Zagreb in 1958 and in 1960, only four years after he began painting, he had his first solo exhibition. Following this he began painting full-time and in 1963 his work was exhibited at the Galerie Mona Lisa in Paris, marking the beginning of his international career. He became known for his geometric and densely patterned works depicting landscapes, vegetation, and clouds. In 1972 he was described as “one of the greatest naïve painters of all times and countries” by the French art critic Anatole Jokovsky. Rabuzin continued to paint until an illness began preventing him in 2002. He passed away on December 18, 2008, in Varaždin, Croatia.
