This antique Indian vessel is all about organic texture. It features a hand-hammered finish on the base, where you can see the thousands of strikes from the artisan's tool. The rim flares out dramatically into a scalloped lotus shape, acting as a wide frame for whatever you place inside. The patina is deep and unpolished, boasting a darkened bronze hue that speaks to its age and use. It’s sturdy, grounded, and has a quiet, sculptural beauty. Sourced from India, this is a traditional Pikdan shape, historically used in households during the era of Paan (betel leaf) chewing. While its origins are utilitarian, the craftsmanship elevates it. The hammering technique is typical of the metalworking communities of Northern India, who hand-beat copper and brass into durable, functional shapes. The lotus motif on the rim is a symbol of purity and rebirth in Indian culture, turning a simple daily object into something spiritually significant.
The deep bowl and wide rim make this shape incredibly versatile for styling. This is the perfect shape for a potted succulent or spill-over plant. The wide rim frames the foliage beautifully while the bulbous base hides the plastic nursery pot.
