This piece is a showstopper because of its silhouette. The wide, fluted rim mimics the petals of an open lotus flower, creating a dramatic frame for whatever you place inside. The craftsmanship features a stunning "two-tone" effect, where the warm, red copper base contrasts with the brass or bronze detailing in the floral engravings. The center features a removable perforated grate with a small finial handle. It is rare to find one with the rim in such excellent condition, as the scalloped edges are delicate and often bent over the last century. Sourced from Northern India this vessel, known as a Pikdan, was an essential component of the luxurious courtly lifestyle associated with "Paan" (betel leaf) culture. In wealthy Mughal and Rajput households, these vessels were placed near seating areas during social gatherings. The perforated top was a clever piece of engineering—it allowed liquid to drain into the bulbous base below while concealing the contents, keeping the aesthetic beautiful and sanitary.
Today, the lotus shape is so distinct that it looks incredible sitting empty on a low coffee table, simply catching the light.
