Peonies are an important Chinese motif symbolizing wealth, prosperity, success, and abundance, which is emphasized by the inscription. The large vertical Chinese characters read "花開富貴" (Huā kāi fù guì), which translates to the set phrase "Blossoms of wealth and prosperity" or "Flower blooms bring wealth and honor" on one side and "eight horses" (八駿圖, bājùntú) design on the other side. The scene depicts a group of running horses in a landscape with a waterfall and pine trees, a classic motif in Chinese art symbolizing speed, perseverance, and success. They were hand made and hand painted large, floor-sized vases with flared rims and gilt dragon handles. They are truly collectible items.
