Kokeshi dolls are simple, handmade wooden dolls with no arms or legs, originally crafted as toys for children in the Tohoku region of northern Japan.
They typically feature a simple trunk and head with painted facial features and a floral or ring design on the body.
There are 12 official styles of Kokeshi, each named after a specific place and adhering to a set of rules regarding shape, color, and motifs. This Kokeshi doll is an antique one with faded paint that measures 15 1/2" and is signed Manabu Nayama.
Since the 1950s, artisans have often signed their work, usually on the bottom.
These dolls have become popular collectibles and are believed to bring happiness and prosperity.
