this armchair, designed by josef hoffmann, is one of the most characteristic pieces of seating furniture from the architect and designer's later work within viennese modernism. Hoffmann developed the t 826 model in 1913 (the 826 model followed the next year) for the company jacob & josef kohn, whose technical expertise in working with bentwood enabled him to realize his strictly geometric design language. The model is characterized by clear lines, balanced proportions, and a subtle decorative rigor that consistently translates hoffmann's architectural thinking into furniture design.
the wiener werkstätte (vienna workshop) used this design object several times for prestigious interiors. Particularly noteworthy is the use of this armchair in the fashion department of the wiener werkstätte on kärntnerstrasse in 1916, where it contributed to the overall aesthetic effect of one of the most avant-garde retail spaces of its time. Furthermore, the model was incorporated into other ensembles designed by hoffmann, such as the poldihütte and the apartment and salon of the influential cultural mediator berta zuckerkandl above café landtmann in vienna. Within these significant interiors, the armchair served as both a functional and iconographic element, reflecting the high artistic standards of the wiener werkstätte.
the example offered here bears the brand stamp and paper label of jacob & josef kohn, thus documenting its historical authenticity. Its original museum condition, with its characteristic, age-related patina, preserves the original surface and lends the chair a special historical depth. It represents an important chapter in austrian design history and is one of the most impressive examples of the collaboration between josef hoffmann and the kohn company.
