Shaped like a grand piano, it features a hinged lid that opens to two unlined compartments and stands on four tapered legs. The exterior is decorated with detailed floral and foliate engraving and an ornate monogram with intertwined letters that appear to be P, J, and K, consistent with traditional Victorian script. Boxes in this form were commonly used for jewelry, trinkets, or small keepsakes.

Barbour Silver Company operated in Hartford, Connecticut from 1892 to 1943 and was known for producing silverplate and sterling hollowware with decorative chased surfaces. The company was later absorbed into the International Silver Company in 1898, though Barbour marks continued to be used into the 1930s.
