Historical Context
The vibrant five-piece garniture set displayed here is a beautiful 20th-century homage to one of the most celebrated and lavish patterns in porcelain history: the "Tobacco Leaf" design.
The 18th-Century Original:
The original pattern emerged in China during the Qianlong reign (1736–1795) of the Qing Dynasty, created specifically for the lucrative European export market, particularly for wealthy Portuguese and Brazilian clients. Despite its name, the exuberant design likely depicts a collection of tropical flora, possibly including the Nicotiana tabacum (tobacco plant) alongside hibiscus, passion flowers, and other colorful blooms. The most prized pieces, like this garniture, often include an exotic bird—here, a stylized peacock (or phoenix)—symbolizing peace and prosperity.
A 20th-Century Revival:
After the 18th century, the demand for this highly decorative style never truly faded. During the 20th century, especially in the mid-to-late decades, the pattern experienced a major revival. Numerous porcelain workshops in China and companies in the West (such as Mottahedeh) began reproducing the beloved design.
This specific garniture—comprising three covered baluster vases and two trumpet-form vases (vases de cheminée)—follows the classic arrangement intended to decorate a mantelpiece or high cabinet in a stately home. Although unmarked, as many 20th-century export pieces were, the rich, detailed enameling and bright cobalt blue ground demonstrate the continued appeal and craftsmanship dedicated to reproducing this timeless expression of Chinoiserie chic for a modern, vintage market.
