A large hand-painted Japanese export vase produced during the Taishō to early Shōwa period (circa 1910–1935), executed in the Satsuma-inspired style popular in the early 20th century. Standing an impressive sixteen inches tall, the vessel is formed from a light earthenware body with a fine crackle glaze typical of the period. The surface decoration consists of multi-panel figural and floral reserves, enriched with raised moriage enamel, gilt detailing, and patterned cartouches derived from Meiji-era design sources.
The molded floral handles and polychrome collar reflect the stylistic vocabulary used by regional kilns producing export ware for Western markets. While not true Satsuma ware, the painting quality, glaze character, and scale place this example within the better mid-tier of Japanese Satsuma-style production.
Provenance details unknown; acquired directly from a Northern California collection.
