A striking mid-century interior by Phyllis Skolnick Hirschberg (1925–2011), a New York painter and printmaker celebrated for her refined graphic sensibility and distinctive, modern approach to everyday subjects.
“Interior: Still Life” presents a sunlit table arrangement framed by a large window, rendered in bold, simplified color fields and harmonious geometry. The composition reflects Hirschberg’s modernist training and the influence of German Expressionism, Japanese woodblocks, and Chinese calligraphy—hallmarks that define her best work.
The painting retains its original artist-made frame, an integral part of the presentation and aesthetic.

In 1946, she produced her acclaimed woodblock series illustrating Voltaire’s Candide, praised by ARTnews and now housed in the collection of The New York Public Library. Her paintings and prints have been exhibited in leading Northeast galleries—Roko, Argent, Winfield, Glenn Horowitz Gallery (East Hampton), Guild Hall Museum, and Silvermine Gallery. Her work has been reviewed in The New York Times, ARTnews, and other significant publications.
A beautifully composed example of Hirschberg’s modernist painting practice and an exceptional decorative work for mid-century interiors.
