This is a beautiful pair of midcentury modern style windsor armchairs designed by Claud Bunyard (American, 1910-2005) for Nichols & Stone. The CB10 Chair is Bunyard’s famous 1963 modernist reinterpretation of the traditional Windsor chair. A version of this chair made for F.W. Lombard Co. is featured in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. Durable and comfortable, these chairs are also found in various academic settings such as the Exeter Library and Yale Center for British Art.
The arm chairs are made of solid ash wood, which is particularly well suited for the making of windsor chairs because of its durability, strength, and ability to be easily steam bent into curves. Each chair features a continuous bow back widening to flat arm rests with 4 spindles under each arm and 10 spindles tapering upward to form the back. The contoured D-shape seat is mounted on round splayed legs, which are supported by a back stretcher and side stretchers with two stretchers in between. The chairs are signed under the seats and dated 1983.
Each chair measures 21.75” wide, 22” deep, and 33” high with a 17” seat height and 24.75” arm height.
The midcentury arm chairs are in good vintage condition. Well-made and rock solid with a nice warm patina. Some wear to the finish, including on the arms and legs. One seat has two spots of darker discoloration. Please see photos for more details about condition.
