A magnificent pair of 19th-century hand-carved lounge chairs by the celebrated Italian sculptor Victor Aimone, whose mastery of Gothic Revival carving earned him international acclaim and a Gold Medal at the Paris Exhibition. These extraordinary chairs showcase Aimone’s unparalleled ability to merge fantasy, narrative, and refined craftsmanship into a single sculptural composition.
The wooden backrests are a true highlight, with a beautifully upholstered central cushion. Flanking the cushion on either side are impressively carved monks, their solemn expressions, flowing robes, and architectural niches rendered with Aimone’s signature precision. Between hem, a pair of powerful dragons stretches across the crest rail. The dragons clutch a central heraldic shield between their claws, their bodies, wings, and fierce expressions carved with remarkable depth and dramatic presence. An unmistakable nod to the medieval imagination that defines Aimone’s finest work.
The armrests end in bold lion claws, each claw gripping the finely carved head of a satyr. The satyrs’ expressive features, curled horns, and dynamic modelling introduce a mythological counterpoint to the spiritual gravity of the monks, enriching the chairs with layered meaning and visual intrigue. Beneath the seat, the legs feature demonlike faces with bat-like wings, a striking Gothic motif executed with exceptional detail and sculptural shadowing.
Each chair stands on robust lion-claw feet, reinforcing the sense of power and grounding while highlighting Aimone’s anatomically precise carving style. Every sculptural detail is meticulously hand-carved, a testament to the extraordinary artistry and labour invested in these pieces This piece has an attribution mark,
