THOMAS SCOFIELD HANDFORTH was an American engraver born in Tacoma, Washington. He studied art both in the U.S. and L'Ecole des Beaux Arts, Paris. Handforth spent time in China during the 1930s, which heavily influenced his art. During his time in Beijing he wrote and illustrated the classic children's "Mei Li", which received the Caldecott Medal in 1939. He also lived and made art in India, North Africa and Mexico.
