This is a beautiful tulip vase, originally from the early 19th century but reproduced by Mottahedeh in the second half of the 20th century. These tulip vases were popular in the early 19th century and were made in pottery by unknown Staffordshire potters.
When Sir Humphrey Wakefield, an English baronet, rescued the delapidated Chillingham Castle in Northern England in the second half of the 20th century, he found that many items were either destroyed or missing. In order to recreate the beautiful interior of the castle faithfully, rather than collecting mismatched items from the wrong periods he decided to have them reproduced with a very high quality. This is how the "Sir Humphrey Wakefield Stately Homes Collection" was born in 1980.
For the porcelain and earthenware Sir Humphrey went to Mottahedeh in New York. Mottahedeh are the prime makers of historical reproductions. The firm was started by Rafi and Mildred Mottahedeh in the mid-20th century, they were avid collectors of antiques and started to produce reproductions to fulfil a need for filling out incomplete collections. This grew out to an important business in the porcelain market; they not only re-issued many historical designs for home and hospitality use in the commercial market, but serve museums all over the world with reproductions that are almost impossible to distinguish from the original. This vase is such an item; it was made exactly the same as the originals and shows the same level of traditional craftsmanship
Made in Italy between 1980 and 2000 and created for display at Chillingham Castle as well as a small quantity for the collectors market. Marked with the Sir Humphrey Wakefield Stately Homes Collection mark.
