A Dala horse (Swedish: Dalahäst) is a traditional wooden figurine depicting a horse, originating from the Swedish province of Dalarna. In the past, the Dala horse was primarily used as a children's toy, but today it has become a symbol of Dalarna and Sweden in general.
It was in small huts deep in the forests, during long winter nights in front of the fire, that the precursors of the Dala horse were born. Using simple tools, usually just a knife, carvers created toys for their children. It's natural that many of these toys were horses, as horses in those days were trusted friends and workers, capable of pulling large loads of wood from the forests during the winter months and equally useful in the fields during the summer.
