Dullaert was a Dutch Golden Age painter who worked under Rembrandt, and was known for 17th century mythological landscapes. The painting depicts a dramatic scene in which a river god rises from the water, reaching for a nymph, while two putti look on from the shoreline. Dullaert's distinctive use of soft, moody lighting and classical narrative themed creates a composition that feels both intimate and theatrical.
