Set of Three Benches in the Manner of André Arbus – French Mid-Century Neoclassical, Gilt Metal Frames, Rosette Ornaments, 1940s–1950s
Presented here is an elegant and refined set of three French mid-century benches executed in the manner of André Arbus, one of the most influential designers of the 20th-century French neoclassical revival. These benches exhibit the sculptural purity, graceful symmetry, and restrained luxury that characterize Arbus’s celebrated design vocabulary.
Each bench features a finely contoured curule-form base crafted in metal, its gently splayed legs joined by a central roundel and decorative rosette medallions—motifs frequently associated with Arbus’s neoclassical reinterpretations of Roman and Empire forms. The metalwork is elegantly patinated, offering a warm, matte sheen that underscores the piece’s refined simplicity.
The seats are upholstered in a vibrant textured rose-pink fabric trimmed with gold cording, providing a striking contrast to the gilt metal structure. The square, well-padded cushions rest securely atop the curving frame, offering both comfort and visual lightness. Their compact proportions and sculptural quality make these benches highly versatile—suitable as end-of-bed stools, entryway seating, vanity benches, or accent pieces in sophisticated living and dressing spaces.
This set of three is especially noteworthy, as triplicate examples are rarely available on the market. Their clean architectural lines, combined with the subtle decorative flourishes of the rosettes, allow them to pair seamlessly with both contemporary interiors and classical décor. They embody the timeless elegance and modern restraint for which the mid-century French decorative arts are prized.
A distinguished choice for collectors, interior designers, and connoisseurs of French mid-century design, these benches beautifully encapsulate the spirit and refinement of André Arbus.
Biography of André Arbus (1903–1969)
André Arbus was a leading figure of the French Moderne and neoclassical revival movement during the mid-20th century. Born in Toulouse to a family of ébénistes, Arbus carried forward the tradition of exceptional French craftsmanship while redefining classical forms for the modern era. He rose to prominence in the 1930s and 1940s, exhibiting regularly at the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs and the Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques of 1937.
Arbus collaborated with some of the greatest artisans of his time—bronziers, sculptors, and cabinetmakers—producing furniture distinguished by elegant silhouettes, bronze ornamentation, sculptural balance, and a refined neoclassical sensibility. His work furnished luxury residences, ocean liners such as the Normandie, and numerous government interiors.
Today, Arbus’s creations are sought after by top collectors and featured in major museums, celebrated for their clarity of line, architectural discipline, and timeless French refinement.
