Offered for sale is an ornate Japanese Sumida Gawa pottery glazed bowl "Ten Men Looking into a Pond". Sumida gawa pottery is a type of Japanese art pottery known for its vibrant colors and heavy, 3-dimentional relief figures of people, animals, and plants applied to the surface. Created primarily for export to the West in the late 19th century, it takes its name from the Sumida River near the Tokyo pottery district where it originated. The style was pioneered by potter Ryosai I around 1890.
