Art glass seems to have been Sven Palmqvist destiny as seen in his famous Kraka vase that he designed and delveloped for Orrefors in 1944. Orrefors was founded in 1898. The Kraka vase series is considered one of its high points of Orrefors postwar productions.
Sven Palmqvist artist and inventor was born in Lenhovda, Smaland, in 1906-1984. In 1926 he was accepted to the Orrefors school of engraving. Two years later he was given permanent employment at Orrefors primarily as an assistant to Simon Gate, and in 1936 he became an artist in his own right, making his debut at the Paris Exposition in 1937. He continued his studies during the thirties at the University College of Arts, Crafts and Design and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts as well as Academie Ranson in Paris. In 1944, he introduced a new decorative technique called Kraka that was built on layers of coloured glass applied over a fine mesh copper net. Then removing the outer layer of glass by sandblasting. Resulting in a teardrop shape in blue and green hues measuring approximately 8.5 inches high, 5.5 wide and 3 inches deep weighing approximately 6 pounds. The bottom of the vase is etched Orrefors, Kraka 349 with Sven Palmqvist's signature. This vase also retains its' original paper label that reads: Josephsson estal 1866, Korsgaton 12, Goteborg. It is in excellent condition and was lovingly cared for by the previous owner.
