The poster for the 46th Annual New York Art Directors Exhibition, was an early celebration of pop art, mod hippy style. Tom Daly painted a fabulous psychedelic pattern on the naked body of the model Wanda Embry which Ken Harris photographed for this promotional poster. This poster imagery was the epitome of pop art/pop culture in the era and inspired subsequent movie posters in the late 1960s (Casino Royale, The Italian Job to name a few).
Tom Daly [Designer], Kenneth Harris [Photographer],
Wanda Embry [Model], The Art Directors Club. THE 46TH ANNUAL EXHIBITION OF ADVERTISING AND EDITORIAL ART AND DESIGN. New York: The Art Directors Club, 1966. First Edition Impression. 12 x 63 inch poster printed in four color on the front, with the reverse side showing details of the call for entries. Folded into 9 equal panels for mailing.
I found this in one of my dad’s art portfolios. He often submitted some of his ad agency work to these call for entries events. It has been folded all these years. Please refer to the photos for condition. As would be expected for something of this age, there are fold marks and irregularities and dog ear areas on corners. I will send more photos upon request as I was limited to 12 for the listing.
The names of many of the heavy hitters in the 1960s advertising game are listed on reverse side as chairpersons and judges for this exhibition.
The poster will be shipped flat, in its folded condition, ready for the buyer to frame it. I didn’t mount it on the backing board to preserve the details of the art exhibition text on the back, which I feel is an important part of this historic poster.
