This exceptional mid-20th-century Chinese six-panel folding screen is a striking, hand-painted work of art on solid wood panels, each measuring 23.25" wide and 96" tall. The composition unfolds across all six panels in a continuous waterfront village scene, featuring elegant pavilions, tiered rooftops, flowering trees, and distant mountains rendered in soft, atmospheric tones. The painterly detail — from the shaded roof tiles to the textured blossoms and architectural line work — reflects the influence of classical Qing Dynasty court paintings and traditional landscape scrolls.
The artwork is executed on paper mounted to substantial 0.75" thick wood panels, giving the screen an impressive weight and presence. The reverse side is finished in a refined gold-colored Japanese paper (non-metallic), allowing the piece to function beautifully as a room divider or as an expansive decorative backdrop. At eight feet tall and over eleven feet wide when fully extended, the screen offers true architectural scale, making it a dramatic focal point in living rooms, lofts, entryways, boutiques, and interior design installations. This is the kind of special piece that you build a room around!
**Please note that I took the photos outside and had to deal with some shadows. That is what you see in the photos - not from the actually painting. The painting looks amazing and flows from one panel to the next seamlessly.
Each panel is 23.25 x 0.75 x 96

Structurally excellent. Sturdy and functions beautifully. There is a visible water stain line along the lower edge of the panels. You can see that the painting below still looks very nice, but there is that "line." It shows on the front and the back. Otherwise, there is some light, expected surface wear from age and a few small imperfections to the wood, as shown. The painted scene remains vibrant and richly detailed, and the hinges operate smoothly. less
