Description
This magnificent Georgian-era cameo brooch portrays Aurora, the Roman goddess of dawn, flying across the heavens in her two-horse chariot. The carving is executed with exceptional finesse: Aurora’s flowing drapery, the powerful movement of the rearing horses, and the delicately engraved details all testify to the hand of a highly skilled Italian engraver.
The warm contrast between the creamy white relief and the honey-toned ground of the shell creates a soft, luminous effect reminiscent of first light breaking over the horizon. The cameo is housed in its original pinchbeck frame, richly ornamented with scrollwork and a beaded border, and retains its classic C-clasp and long pin – all consistent with late Georgian workmanship.
A substantial and elegant statement piece, it is both wearable art and a fine example of neoclassical taste.
Mythology & Meaning
In Roman mythology, Aurora (Eos in Greek) rises each morning from the sea to usher in the dawn and dispel the darkness of night. She is associated with renewal, hope, and fresh beginnings.
During the early 19th century, neoclassical artists and jewellers embraced Aurora as a refined and poetic motif. Cameos of this subject were worn not only for their beauty but also for their allegorical resonance. This brooch therefore carries both aesthetic appeal and symbolic depth, making it an especially thoughtful choice for a Christmas, holiday, or anniversary gift, signifying light, optimism, and new chapters.

Material: Original early 19th-century pinchbeck (a gold-toned copper–zinc alloy)
