20th Century Secretary, or fall front, Desk ( secrétaire à abattant ) in the French Empire / Viennese and Austrian … Read more 20th Century Secretary, or fall front, Desk ( secrétaire à abattant ) in the French Empire / Viennese and Austrian Biedermeier style finished with mahogany veneers and chased brass mounts.

The form is of a lyre, often used as inspiration as music was an integral aspect of Viennese life during the Biedermeier age of 1815-1848.

Under the chased brass trim at the top is a single drawer with two chrysanthemum chased pulls and inlaid brass banding. Brass banding is also inset to the sides of the drawer.

The drop front is located below more chased brass trim. The panel is framed with chased brass trim and there is a chased brass key scutcheon at top.

The interior is fitted with eight small storage drawers - four on either side of the central cabinet. The drawers feature inset brass banding and laurel wreath drop pulls. Below the central cabinet is one long drawer with inlaid brass banding and two laurel wreath drop pulls. The shaped door at center is framed and inlaid with brass banding. The open door reveals a hidden cocktail cabinet with one glass shelf and mirrored back. The writing and work surface of the drop front panel is inset with embossed gold decoration on green leather.

The possum belly drawer below the drop panel is edged with inset brass banding and has two chrysanthemum chased brass pulls.

The base has one shaped drawer with a chrysanthemum chased brass pull and inlaid brass banding. On each side of this drawer are gilt dolphins.

At the bottom, above the bun feet, is one long drawer with two chrysanthemum chased pulls and inlaid brass banding.

Desk will complement interiors featuring decorative elements of Empire, Biedermeier, Regency and Neoclassical.
