This vase is part of a set of 2 vases created for this product line designed and hand painted by the artist that included wine glasses, vases and paperweights in this black, red and yellow combination on frosted clear glass. The vases in the collection refer to mythical characters and stories, in this case the goddess Medusa who is characterized by snakes coming from her hair and possesses an extraordinary power over men (by turning them to stone with one gaze) both of which have contributed to the association of her character with the power to endure sexual violence and repression. Hyman-Valliens (1938-2018), who worked for Kosta Boda from the 1980s through 2011, was known for combining crafsmanship with playfulness, using color and whimsy, as is shown in this item. She is known for several successful collections for Kosta Boda including Open Minds, Caranuba, Tulipa and the extraordinarily successful Mine line (2002) from which IKEA alone ordered 40k pieces. This vase measures 6 1/4" high and 4" in diameter at its"belly". The artist's incised signature and piece number can be found on the bottom of the glass base and still has its original Kosta Boda sticker on the front. This interesting art vase is cheerful and fun, at the same time nodding to some of the cultural topics of the 1990s, great as an art object or to enhance a simple flower arrangement on a shelf or side table.
