A striking pair of Japanese Tokoname terracotta vases, each standing an impressive 15 inches tall and decorated with applied gold-gilt dragons in dynamic, high-relief form. The upper bodies feature Tokoname’s signature textured “aka-yaki” surface, creating a dramatic contrast with the smooth lower registers and crisp incised borders. The gilt dragons coil across the surface amongst the clouds with wonderful energy—scales, claws, and whiskers shimmering against the warm red clay.
Both vases include gilded Greek-key rim banding and hand-tooled decorative motifs, details that underscore the careful studio craftsmanship typical of mid-20th century Tokoname workshops. Sculptural, bold, and unmistakably Japanese in character, this is a presentation-worthy pair ideal for flanking a console, anchoring a mantle, or bringing visual drama to your curated interior.
COLLECTOR'S NOTE
Tokoname—one of the Six Ancient Kilns of Japan—has long been prized for its iron-rich red clay and hand-finished surface textures. Mid-century workshops often experimented with sculptural embellishments, and applied gilt dragons such as these were produced in small quantities for export, making matched pairs notably scarce today. The dragon, a Japanese symbol of wisdom and protective power, was considered especially auspicious when depicted in motion, as seen here. Collectors value these pieces not only for their dramatic presence, but also for the way they reflect Tokoname’s transition from traditional tea-ceremony wares to bold postwar decorative forms.
