A finely modelled and brightly enamelled derby porcelain figure depicting the actor james quin in the role of sir john falstaff, after francis hayman’s composition engraved by james mcardell (c.1760). Quin, known for his grand delivery and comic timing, first performed falstaff at drury lane theatre in 1742, establishing the archetype for the role.
the figure shows falstaff with sword and gilded shield, wearing a multi-coloured striped doublet, pink breeches, and green-lined cloak, all raised on a scroll-moulded base with floral embellishment. A small paper “bill” tucked in his belt references the character’s debts and tavern escapades.
marked underneath with impressed 291 and painter’s mark no 5.
referenced in peter bradshaw, derby porcelain figures 1750–1848 (1990). Comparable pieces are housed in the british museum and v&a, london.
