a fine mid-18th-century english brass sector, clearly signed “r. Glynne fecit”, indicating manufacture by the little-documented instrument-maker r. Glynne, active in london during the mid-1700s. The instrument is entirely constructed in brass, with crisply engraved proportional scales including sine, tangent, secant, line, chord, and various diagonal scales typical of english military and mathematical practice. Both arms retain their original engraved markings, which remain fully legible despite age. The sector opens and closes properly, with the characteristic decorated circular hinge typical of 18th-century english work. Sectors of this period signed by minor makers such as glynne are comparatively scarce, as most known examples originate from the large london workshops of adams, dollond, watkins or heath.
