Lajos Kozma (1884–1948)
Documented Art Deco Dining Suite, 1931
Published, original commission – complete set of 12 pieces
A museum-quality, fully documented Art Deco dining room suite designed by Lajos Kozma, the leading figure of early Hungarian modernism.
Commissioned in 1931 by a known Budapest client, the ensemble has remained in the original villa dining room for more than ninety years — a truly unique survival of Central European design history.
This exact model was published in the architectural journal Tér és Forma (Vol. 1930/1) under the title “Giccs – Kvalitásmunka” (Kitsch – Quality Work), where Kozma’s sideboard was illustrated and credited as “Edényszekrény. Tervezte: Kozma Lajos”.
The publication confirms the provenance, authorship, and period context, making this one of the few documented Kozma ensembles known to exist in private hands.
Comprising 12 original pieces:
1 large sideboard with four doors, cross-banded walnut veneer, horizontal Kozma-style geometric inlay, and one glazed door at one end,
1 smaller sideboard, similarly veneered and inlaid,
1 display cabinet with glazed side doors and a lower drawer, internally veneered in mahogany,
1 oval extending dining table on massive oblong supports, veneered and inlaid,
8 chairs, including 2 armchairs, with curved padded backs and sprung seats on square legs.
Materials & Details:
Solid wood structure with walnut veneer, cross-banded decoration, and horizontal geometric inlays characteristic of Kozma’s mature Art Deco phase.
Interiors finished in mahogany veneer; all metal fittings, locks, keys, and hinges are original and functional.
The glazing is entirely original, featuring the light distortion typical of 1930s handmade glass.
Upholstery on the chairs is period, requiring restoration.
Condition:
The suite remains entirely original and structurally sound.
The dining table top shows veneer lifting and requires inlay restoration on the upper surface!
The right upper side of the large sideboard needs surface refinishing.
All veneers are otherwise intact; locks and keys are working.
No parts have been replaced or altered.
Significance:
This dining suite exemplifies Kozma’s distinctive synthesis of modernist geometry and decorative sophistication, reflecting both Viennese influence and Hungarian craftsmanship.
Its documented provenance, complete state, and publication record make it an unparalleled example of authentic interwar design heritage.
A rare opportunity to acquire a published, original-location Kozma Lajos ensemble, suitable for museum acquisition or advanced private collection.
