The drum has a relatively low, broad shape, typical for this type of shime-daiko used in Japan for festivals, parades and traditional music. The keyaki wood shows a pronounced grain, giving the drum a richly aged presence as an object in its own right.

Animal skins are stretched over both sides, with a beautiful, time-worn patina. The skins remain intact and firm and, together with the original rope tension, make the drum still playable. The ropes are laced in a criss-cross pattern around the shell, providing both tension and a decorative rhythm of lines around the instrument.

Besides being a musical instrument, this is above all a strong decorative piece. The drum looks wonderful on the floor, on a low table or as a striking base for a sculpture or object. See less
