Coronation of the Virgin
Lima, mid-18th century – Cuzco School
Oil on canvas
175 × 124.5 cm
This large-format painting depicts the Coronation of the Virgin Mary by the Trinity, a theme particularly prevalent in colonial Andean painting. Mary kneels in the center on a bank of clouds, surrounded by cherubs, while Christ and God the Father together hold the crown above her head. The dove of the Holy Spirit hovers above in a halo of light. The composition follows the Trinitarian pictorial scheme characteristic of the Cuzco School: symmetrical structure, clearly defined figures, decorative, planar modeling, and an intense use of color and gold ornamentation typical of the mature style of the 18th century.
The work is distinguished by its delicate textile patterns and the Cuzco-typical fusion of European Baroque models with a distinctive, ornamentally emphasized Andean aesthetic. Its monumental format suggests a church commission and clearly distinguishes it from the numerous smaller devotional and export paintings of the period that have survived.
Comparative section:
Compared to other Coronations of the Virgin from the Cuzco school, this painting has a particularly impressive presence. Smaller examples—often 60–120 cm high—generally served private chapels or the wider art market, while large-format works like this one, measuring approximately 157 x 108.5 cm (framed approximately 175 x 124.5 cm), clearly belong to the category of altarpieces and main paintings. The clear focus on the heavenly scene, without additional groups of saints or local references, corresponds to the "classical" Trinitarian type and underscores the painting's dogmatic significance. Stylistically, the work is reminiscent of high-quality Cusqueña productions of the mid-18th century, whose rich ornamentation and intense color are among the most characteristic features of colonial Andean painting.
Condition: Age-appropriate condition with craquelure and occasional retouching; canvas stabilized, vibrant colors, and clear iconographic legibility. Inscribed on the reverse: "Restaurado por Oswaldo Carrasco Lozano. Anno 1970 Lima-Peru," minor holes in the canvas, several small repairs on the reverse.
