Pair of Sculptural Ashwood Lounge Chairs by Jan Vaněk, Czech Republic, 1960s A sculptural pair of ashwood lounge chairs by Jan Vaněk, Czech Republic, 1960s. Strong architectural lines, slatted construction and a warm natural patina. This sculptural pair of lounge chairs was designed by Jan Vaněk and produced in Czechoslovakia during the 1960s. Executed in solid ashwood, the chairs embody the rational yet expressive design language characteristic of mid-century Czech modernism. The ashwood presents a beautifully pronounced linear grain, and over time it has developed a warm natural patina that highlights the craftsmanship and material quality. The design is both architectural and sculptural: angled legs give the chairs a dynamic stance, while the gently curved armrests soften the geometry and provide tactile comfort. The slatted seat and backrest add visual rhythm and structural clarity, keeping the overall profile light and open. The reclining position is thoughtfully balanced, reflecting Vaněk’s emphasis on ergonomic seating and user-centred construction. Jan Vaněk played a significant role in shaping Czech functionalist furniture of the mid-20th century. His work combines artisanal joinery with an architectural sense of proportion, and these chairs exemplify that blend of honesty, structure and visual strength. The pair is in good vintage condition, showing light wear consistent with age and use. The frames are strong and stable, and the chairs are suitable for daily use. Their timeless lines and sculptural presence make them highly versatile pieces — fitting naturally into modernist, Wabi-Sabi, Scandinavian, rustic contemporary or minimalist interiors.
