Vintage Mid-century Modern Israeli Hand-Painted Ceramic Vase made by Lapid - Circa 1960’s
Very Early and Rare Israel Lapid Vase as shown by its Pottery Mark. Most likely made between 1959 (first year of decorative pottery production for Lapid) and 1960. This is prior to Lapid's artist-signed production.
This 6-inch-tall Vase depicts six Gazelles prancing. This distinctive Deer/Gazelle pattern is known as "Ayelet", which means "Doe of the Dawn" or "Gazelle". "Ayelet" is also referred to as "Eilot.” Vintage Mid-century Modern Israeli Hand-Painted Ceramic Bowl made by Lapid - Circa 1960’s
The unique pottery method called "Sgraffito" is used. It's a pottery technique whereby the artist scratches away the matte finish color layer to reveal a different finish/color underneath, thus purposely creating a primitive aesthetic to the Vase. The deep matte finish is prone to revealing slight imperfections; however, this corresponds to the desired rustic result the artist looks to achieve. The inside of the Vase is the traditional glazed ceramic, in a very light white finish. The vase is model 57, as embossed on the underside of the base with the earlier Lapid identification mark.
Lapid Pottery was located in Tel Aviv-Jaffa, Israel and was established in 1944 and continued to produce pottery until 1990. In 1949, the factory changed its original goal of making tiles and sanitary wares - to producing Art Pottery which was inspired by Scandinavian design. The designers were primarily responsible for the forms and shapes, and the head decorator the designs. A group of 7-8 decorators were responsible for hand painting the designs onto the art pottery, making for subtle variations between the same base designs, and each piece unique. The multitude of shapes and decorations makes each piece unique.
