Nautical Romance: Large "Gift of Love" Double Sailor's Valentine (Mid-20th Century)
An impressive and unusually large double-sided Sailor's Valentine, housed in a traditional hinged octagonal mahogany case. While following the intricate tradition of 19th-century Caribbean shellwork, this example dates to the mid-20th century, representing a high-quality revival of the craft.
The work features two distinct geometric mosaics composed of thousands of tiny, sorted seashells, designed to evoke deep sentiment:
• The Left Panel: Features the enduring romantic motto "A GIFT OF LOVE" spelled out in dark snail shells against a contrasting field of white. This central medallion is surrounded by concentric rings of pink, purple, and ochre shells, arranged in precise floral and starburst patterns.
• The Right Panel: Centers on a large, romantic Heart motif framed by a wreath of colored shells and intricate borders.
The case construction features a mahogany frame with a pine backing on one side. The large scale (over 28 inches wide when open) makes this a commanding display piece of nautical folk art.
Measurements:
• Closed (Octagon): 36.2 cm x 36.2 cm (14 1/4 inches x 14 1/4 inches)
• Open Width: 73 cm (28 3/4 inches)
• Depth (Closed): 10.2 cm (4 inches)
Historical Context: Sailor's Valentines were originally a 19th-century souvenir trade phenomenon. While popular legend claims bored sailors made these at sea to bring home to their sweethearts, the vast majority were actually purchased ready-made by sailors in Barbados (specifically at the "New Curiosity Shop" in Bridgetown).
Local island artisans created these intricate mosaics using indigenous shells. The tradition saw a revival in the mid-20th century as collectors and tourists sought to recapture the romance of the Victorian maritime era. The "Gift of Love" motto is among the most classic and desirable sentiments found in this genre.
