This shellwork diorama presents a chromolithograph of a Royal Navy cruiser beneath a domed glass "porthole" set in a four-pointed star frame, a shape far less common than the circular and heart-shaped frames in which these seaside souvenirs were usually sold. The print shows a two-masted, two-funneled warship steaming past a low coast in the black, white and buff peacetime livery of the late Victorian fleet, her masts carrying fighting tops and her side pierced by the gun ports and scuttles of a protected cruiser of the type completed for the Royal Navy in the late 1890s. A print of this size does not permit a firm identification of the ship. Her profile is consistent with the two-funneled second-class cruisers of the Highflyer class (Highflyer, Hermes and Hyacinth, completed 1899–1900), and HMS Hyacinth, which served as flagship of the East Indies station from 1903, is one possibility.

In front of the print the maker built up a foreground of dried seaweed and sprays of red marine algae, with two cowrie shells and a third small shell with an orange-tinted aperture set on a bed of sand and shell grit, so that the ship appears to be seen from the shore across a stretch of beach. The domed glass is held within a black composition bezel with a serrated inner edge.

Around the porthole a ring of pale, curling bivalve shells forms a rugged inner border, and the four points of the star are paved with graduated rows of small iridescent top shells, their pearly green and gold surfaces catching the light, with clusters of tiny pink and white shells and a single egg-shaped shell at each point. The back is covered with printed wood-grain paper and fitted with a brass hanging ring, as found on commercially made examples of the period.

Small, deep in texture and easy to hang, the diorama suits a bathroom, a hallway or a cluster of nautical objects and pictures in a coastal house, and its star shape makes it a natural anchor for a group of the circular examples more commonly found.

Historical Context
Shell-encrusted frames of this kind, with a colored print under a domed glass and a foreground of seaweed and shells, were made in quantity for sale at British seaside resorts and naval ports in the closing years of Victoria's reign and through the Edwardian period. Bought by holidaymakers and, by tradition, by sailors as gifts for wives and sweethearts, they have come to be called "valentines," although they are distinct from the earlier octagonal shell mosaics of Barbados known as sailors' valentines. Naval subjects were especially popular at a time when the Royal Navy's building program of the 1890s, the fleet reviews of 1897 and 1902 and the spread of the picture postcard had made the new cruisers and battleships familiar to the public.
