Bernard Buffet ( 1928 - 1999 ) was a French painter, printmaker, and sculptor. An extremely prolific artist, he produced a varied and extensive body of work. His style was exclusively figurative and is often classified as Expressionist or Miserabilist. He enjoyed international acclaim in the 1950's and was often compared to Pablo Picasso for his fame and talent. By the age of 21, Buffet was already considered one of the greatest stars of the art world, and named one of the " Fabulous Five " cultural figures of Post-War France ( the other four were Brigitte Bardot, Francoise Sagan, Roger Vadim, and Yves Saint Laurent ).
Among the subjects he chose were of religion, landscapes, portraits and still lifes. His work was characterized by thick black lines, elongated forms, and a lack of depth of field. In The 21st Century there has been a renewed interest in the work of Buffet, his oeuvre is particularly popular in Europe and Asia. Corresponding with this interest, Buffet's work has broken previous auction records.
The venerable famous printing house of Imprimerie Mourlot Paris was founded in 1852 by The Mourlot Family. It is known worldwide for its fine art lithography printing, and one of their most important contributions was to be the art poster. Mourlot became the place where posters were prepared and produced as works of art in their own right.
Beginning in the 1930's Fernand Mourlot invited the major artists of the time into the lithography studio to learn the medium of printing together. Encouraging the artists to work directly on the lithography plates to create original prints and posters in limited editions. The results of this artistic collaboration between master artists and Mourlot became internationally known for their originality, beauty, and exquisite craftsmanship.
Bernard Buffet, on the heels of his success with The New York Lithographic Album of 1964, began a collaboration and long lasting partnership with Mourlot who together would create many important art posters. This fine art lithograph poster is one of the most desirable of that collaboration. The extremely well balanced composition is one of Buffet's most sought after lithographs.
