An American porcelain vase by mid-20th century ceramicist Rodney Rouse (1903-1977) of Trenton, New Jersey, dating circa 1965-1970. The vintage vase is decorated with a crisp, glossy glaze of apple green and is finished with Rouse's intentional craquelure (cracked glaze) overall, a technique he perfected throughout his career. Very good condition, measuring 9 in. Height x 5.25 in. diameter, marked with Rouse's artist's cipher on base.
This vase is part of Rouse's range of K'ang Hsi Monochromes which he characterized as "re-creations of porcelains unmatched since Chinese potters made them for Emperor K'ang Hsi nearly 300 years ago." Rouse described the limited range of vase forms for the Monochromes series as of "...perfect proportions, entirely without decoration."
Rodney Rouse started working with pottery as a ceramic engineering student at Rutgers in the 1950s. The artist developed glaze colors and techniques emulating historical Chinese porcelains. Rouse's work is part of the Newark Museum's collection of American pottery.
