Each is decorated in an American flag design, and all are stored in their original cardboard box.
These types of slate pencils were commonly used during the Civil War......by troops at the front or children at school. They were distributed as a sign of patriotism. Children would use them to write on handheld slates or small blackboards, and they were widely used in schools and by soldiers to write letters home.
