This large-scale ceramic plate exemplifies the studio ceramics movement in Soviet Central Asia, where trained fine artists experimented with monumental and decorative forms beyond mass factory production. Kedrin’s work—bearing strong enamel glazes, fused glass texture, and expressive coloration—fits within the late modernist aesthetic of the Tashkent Art-Production Combine, a regional branch supporting Union artists.
The use of molten glass inclusions (deep cobalt, turquoise, and orange crystalline layers) and textural overglazing demonstrates mastery of high-temperature firing techniques. Such large ceramic works were technically demanding, with a high risk of cracking during kiln firing, making successful examples rare and highly valued.
