They came from a French publication, "Revue Horticole", a comprehensive source of scientific information on the history and cultivation of the botanical world. It was widely respected as the go-to resource of horticulture study. The journal contained chromolithographs of plant species. This pair showcase the Onoseris Drakeana (of the Daisy family) and the Gloxinia. There is a beautiful depth of detail and interest in these botanicals. The techonology of chromolithography was a time consuming process developed in the 1860s for making muti-colored prints. It ultilized the use of multiple stones, one for each color. It was an expensive technique that required skilled craftsmen. The process of successive layering of colors and tones resulted in a beauty much like handpainted oil paintings.
