This exquisite circa 1890 advertising counter top store display cabinet for Hanford’s Balsam of Myrrh is a splendid piece of history and a fine example of antique craftsmanship. The top and bottom of the cabinet are adorned with painted text, proudly advertising "Hanford’s" at the top and "Balsam of Myrrh" at the bottom, capturing the essence of its original purpose in a late 19th-century apothecary or general store. Imagine this cabinet gracing the countertop of an old-timey pharmacy, filled with bottles of the renowned Balsam of Myrrh, a popular remedy of its time, trusted for its healing properties.
Hanford's Balsam of Myrrh was a popular medicinal remedy developed in the mid-19th century by Seth Arnold of Smithfield, Rhode Island. Marketed as a cure-all, it was touted for its healing properties, particularly for wounds, burns, and various skin conditions. The balsam was a blend of myrrh, a resin obtained from the Commiphora tree, and other ingredients, known for its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. Its effectiveness and popularity made it a common household remedy throughout the late 1800s and early 1900s. The product’s success exemplified the era's patent medicine trend, where proprietary concoctions were widely marketed and sold with grand health claims.
Standing at 24.25 inches high, 14 inches wide, and 9.5 inches deep, this charming cabinet features its original wavy glass front, showcasing its authenticity and vintage appeal. Weighing 18 pounds, the cabinet is sturdily built with three interior shelves, offering ample space for displaying various items. Untouched condition, retaining original surfaces.
