This piece of Ethiopian folk art represents the Lion of Judah, symbol of Ethiopia's deeply rooted heritage in Christian Orthodoxy:
the Lion (mentioned in both Genesis and Revelations) has powers of vigilance, justice, strength, qualities of a protector and ruler.
This depiction of the lion is knitted from handspun goat hair and sheep wool; the colors of red, natural, and black are created with natural dyes.
The hanging measures 39" wide x 34" long, fringed; it is clean, in excellent condition.
Probably from the '50s.
