Antique Lithograph of a LARGE COMMODE.
In mahogany and copper gilt, by Beneman.
PERIOD OF LOUIS XVI.
Palace of Fontainebleau.
The front is chiefly remarkable for a central arch in the middle of which is a bas-relief of chased and gilt metal representing a trophy of arms, flags and boughs of oak and laurel. On the drawer is a running wreath of oak leaves.
This peace of furniture, massive in appearance, shows the leaning towards antique art, which was already discernible in some artists by the end of the reign of Louis XV. and which became predominant in that of Louis XVI. The fine workmanship of the metal ornaments will always save Beneman's furniture from neglect. In this instance he collaborated with Joseph Stockel, the cabinet-maker. Beneman and Stockel were Germans, and it is impossible to over-state the influence exerted on the French architects and designers who supplied them with models, by the German craftsmen who flocked in increasing numbers to the workshops of Paris cabinet-makers, during the reign of Louis XVI.
Guillaume Beneman, living in the Rue Forest, was registered as a master cabinet-maker,
September 3, 1785; he was still working in 1802.
Presented matted and framed.
