Embossed signature and number to metal label along the bottom “Peter Collingwood M. 164 No. 1.” Circa 1980s. Dark brown geometric diamond shapes are woven into a unique visual abstraction. Peter Collingwood (1922-2008) was the pre-eminent British artist weaver of the past 50 years. His technical and aesthetic innovations have been appreciated around the world, most notably in his Macrogauze wall hangings, in which his traditional skill and visual abstraction work in perfect harmony. A master craftsman and the author of several works on weaving, his work as a teacher and his generous spirit had a profound and lasting impact on generations of students. His work is highly coveted and is held in important private collections and public institutions internationally including Tate in London, the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum in New York, and the Art Institute of Chicago.
